»Boys Don't Cry« wurde ursprünglich im Sommer 1979 als eigenständige Single veröffentlicht und wurde zum Titelsong der US-Ausgabe des Debütalbums der Band, »Three Imaginary Boys«. Der Song entwickelte sich zu einem der bekanntesten Songs der Band und erzielte 1986 internationalen Erfolg, als Robert Smith den Gesang neu aufnahm und den Backing Track neu abmischte.
